DC20 - Jan 25 Update: Happy Holidays + Subclass Update + DC20 Gift
over 1 year ago
– Fri, Dec 20, 2024 at 10:41:41 PM
Happy Holidays everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays and spending time with loved ones! I will be doing the same but will still be working on finishing off the last parts of 0.9! HUGE progress this month again and we are in the home stretch now for sure (check out the images below!).
Free Mini Gift
Hey there DC20 community and Kickstarter backers! I wanted to update you guys early, so this is the January 1st update for 2025 that I wanted to give to you guys early, because I wanted to give you a holiday gift! This is a FREE mini from Beast Miniatures, and I’m going to be partnering with them to make even more high quality DC20 minis off into the future. They literally made this for free and wanna give it to you guys, so big shoutout to them and I’m excited to work with them in the future.
All you need to do is enter the password and you can download the file for the Penguinborn miniature for free. I’ll be working with Beast Miniatures in the future for them to help bring DC20 and all of its awesome monsters and heroes to life!
This started off as a joke during the Kickstarter, but this community has now fully brought the joke to LIFE! There will be more "serious" minis in the future, but this was a fun one to kick things off... and the penguin goes with the winter holiday too!
Subclass Update
Things are moving along AMAZINGLY! Like I said in the last update, adding the Paragon Subclasses based on community feedback was a great decision, and we thank you for the warm reception of this decision. I’m always listening to you guys and love hearing the feedback you provide! The addition of these has pushed back the release of 0.9 by about a month or two. We’ve made huge progress since last week, and here’s the exact progress report of where everything is at
We now have 20/26 of the Subclasses that will be released in 0.9 and the Paragon Subclasses are very close to being finished as well!
Release Date Estimate
Disclaimer: This is an estimate and please don't be upset if I am off on this, but I wanted to give you guys my best guess at a release date for DC20 0.9. I will of course keep you posted and stay tuned to the NEXT update for Feb!
Estimated Release Date: By the end of the month of February 2025

DC20 - Dec 24 Update: Paragon Subclass Reveal + Progress
over 1 year ago
– Sun, Dec 01, 2024 at 01:36:19 PM
I’m excited to be able to share a HUGE announcement on every single Subclass that’s going into 0.9. If you guys remember last time, I told you that we were gonna go from 3 Subclasses down to 2 for 0.9… well, there’s good news in that we’re going BACK up to 3 Subclasses, but we’re going to be introducing Paragon Subclasses. We’re super excited to share this idea with you!
What is a Paragon Subclass?
DC20 will have 3 Subclasses for each Class as you’re used to seeing, each with an exciting take on the Class taking it in a unique and different direction. BUT these NEW “Paragon Subclasses” are meant for the people who want to stay true to the core Class fantasy, without adding anything wild (like adding extra arcane, divine or primal curve balls). If you want to be a true Barbarian’s Barbarian or a Wizard’s Wizard, and you already like what the Class fantasy is and want to dive into that more, then the Paragon Subclass is for you.
How the Paragon Subclass works is that you’re going to be given a Class Talent to be able to spend within your Class. There’s going to be at least 2 options within the Paragon Subclass, and you’ll be able to become even more immersed within your own Class. For example, the Subclasses released in 0.9 for the Barbarian will be an Elemental Barbarian and a Spirit Guardian Barbarian… so, if you make a Barbarian, and you don’t want to take on any elemental or spiritual properties, then the Paragon Subclass will let you do that.
There will be a Paragon Subclass for every single Class, which is what’s adding the 13 new Subclass options and bringing total number of Subclass options in 0.9 back up to 39.
Where are we at right now?
I’m so excited to show you this image below. This image shows EXACTLY where we’re at in the design process for every single Subclass possible. I’ll explain what each color means, and there will also be a list below on what each Subclass is.
Disclaimer: the Bard and Warlock have more listed than will be released in 0.9, because we’re still whittling down those two.
List of 0.9 Subclasses
Remember that each is getting a Paragon Subclass. For the most part, these are just 2 of the 3 Subclasses that will be released for the Core Rules for DC20 (some of these include 3 or more that will be narrowed down), and each Class will have a 4th option of the Paragon Subclass.

DC20 - Nov 24 Update: Subclass Brainstorm Complete
over 1 year ago
– Fri, Nov 01, 2024 at 08:34:05 AM
DC 0.9 Updates
This has been the MOST productive month EVER for DC20’s production! Things are being dialed in now that all of the Kickstarter launch has ended and the team is finding their footing, along with me finally being able to focus ONYL on making the game (instead of other logistical / social media stuff). And it’s all thank to YOUR support!
Subclasses
We’ve been doing a lot of brainstorming on exactly WHAT subclasses to make. We’ve had a lot of discussion over how Subclass Features interact with the Class itself and with other Subclasses, to make sure there’s not any strange overlap or broken interactions.
Now, we’re finally to the point where every Class is in a good spot and the brainstorming for all the Subclasses is DONE! So now that we’ve decided what Subclasses to make our full focus is on finishing the Level 3 Subclass Features for each and then get it in your hands!
There’s going to be 26 different Subclasses (2 for each Class) going into 0.9, with 13 more Subclasses (1 more for each) coming down the pipeline. A ton of those Subclasses already have actual mechanics and Features that the team has developed as me and the team work on them and put them together. And one Subclass for the Sorcerer is pretty much done!
Future Production Updates
Here is the updated image that I have been showing yall for the Subclass Brainstorm Progression:
You also might have noticed 2 Class names have changed!
Fighter -> Champion Ranger -> Hunter
I went into longer detail in this Livestream Here on why those changes were made, but I am really excited to see DC20 truly spread its wings!
I’m working on a new way to show you guys the production progress, with an idea of giving a “loading bar” that shows how much we’ve completed and where we’re at in this whole process. While I’m not giving any dates, I want to provide full transparency on exactly where we’re at on everything and what things are looking like. Now, I’m working on a new Screenshot I can start to share in these updates that shows each Class and Subclass with a color coded circle next to each which displays how far along they are. I wanna be able to show you the progression per Subclass now, since before it was just the big picture before. Now you’ll be able to see the actual loading bar for each of those Subclasses! Once I’ve showcased them all in livestreams, I’ll be sharing these images so you can see that as soon as possible.
Since October was so wildly productive and we’re now on a roll, we’re all super excited to see how productive we can be in the future.

If you want to hear a more in-depth update, I also recorded this video to give you my full thoughts and to explain our development processes in a little more detail.

DC20 - Oct 24 Update: Class Reworks + Subclasses
over 1 year ago
– Wed, Oct 02, 2024 at 10:09:29 AM
DC20 0.9 Updates
Things are looking great AND October is looking to be the MOST productive month yet! Everything is dialing up and October marks the first month that I can truly focus on nothing but creating Subclasses. Before now has been a lot of Kickstarter things, team training, and class reworks (explained below). But now with all that out of the way expect to see a BIG jump forward in progress this month!
Class Changes
These were VERY important to do NOW because Subclasses build on level 1 and 2 features of all Classes, so I felt that now was the best time do do that. If you want to know more you can check out the YouTube video I made with more details linked below, but here is the big picture.
Fighter: Entire Rework of ALL level 1 and 2 Class Features
Cleric: Level 1 Feature Rework to grant Clerics a list of Divine Domain Options (similar to how Spellblades Disciplines work)
Warlock: Rework level 1 and 2 Self Healing mechanics and overall "re-flavored" things away from a BLOOD feel and to more of a pact and contract feel
Wizard: Flavor Feature Update
Bard: Level 1 and 2 Feature reorganization (they were the most "OP" class on paper)
Subclasses
I will keep showing the update to this image each month until we have ALL Purples (the final stage). So here is exactly where we are in that process for EACH Class. I use a color coded system to show where each class is:
White: Brainstorm Phase - think of all possible ideas Blue: Narrow Down Phase - eliminate and condense ideas into 8+ subclasses Gold: Mechanics Phase - establish the subclass fantasy and core mechanics Purple: Subclass Creation Phase - each subclass is ready to be created
Here is a picture to show what Phase each class is at. The GOAL is to get ALL Purple, because once each of them are purple that means we are finalizing all the subclasses!
Given all the other things going on and the large amount of time put into Class reworks like the Cleric, Fighter, and others... this is a HUGE amount of progress, and will be even more during this month!

DC20 - Sept 24' Update: Back from Gen Con + Subclasses
almost 2 years ago
– Wed, Aug 28, 2024 at 11:30:36 AM
First Full Project Update
Things have been wild the last 2 months! We Launched the Kickstarter, got through first round fulfilment of the 2 PDFs (Core Rules 0.8 and Monster Starter Pack 0.1), went to Gen Con, and NOW we are back and able to go ALL IN on DC20! There have been a lot of really cool things I want to share, but if you ONLY want the DC20 0.9 Updates, then here we go!
DC20 0.9 Updates
Starting with what people probably want to know the MOST, what is the status of Beta 0.9? So like I have said before, I will not be saying any dates or estimates of dates, this just puts wild pressure on me and then disappointment on yall if I don't hit the date. So instead I think a better way is to just show things as transparently as possible and you will SEE us get closer and closer to the finish line of each update to the Beta!
0.9 will bring SUBCLASSES to DC20 and open up the Level Cap of the game from only Level 2, up to Level 4! DOUBLE THE LEVELS!!!
Here is a small list of some other changes that have snuck into 0.9 as well!
Initiative Rework
Talent Update and Simplification
Random Balance Tweaks
Subclasses
There are going to be 3 Subclasses for ALL 13 Classes in the Core Rules for DC20. So I have a very elaborate process that EACH class goes through to "find" it's subclasses. I could easily make up a cool concept and crank out a subclass... but I want to future proof DC20 and TRULY take a big step back and see where the overall design space is for EACH class... then we can see the big picture of which subclasses will be those 3 that go in the Core Rules (and more to come in future books).
The only reason Cleric is white is because... Cleric subclasses are based off their domains... and I have to create a full blown domain / pantheon of gods that both works for DC20's lore and campaign setting AND is applicable to OTHER campaign settings as well. Which is QUITE the challenge, but an exciting prospect if I can do it right!
So check back next month for where these colors are and you'll see how far each class as come (and if we have any purples!!!)
Subclasses for 0.9 3->2
So I have good news and bad news here... Bad News: For the Beta 0.9 I will be reducing the number of subclasses released for each class from 3 down to 2. Good News: Beta 0.9 will be coming out sooner than it would have before... since now we only have to make 26 Subclasses... instead of 39!
BUT this just means that you will get the 3rd Subclass for each in a future Beta Release (probably 0.11).
DC20 Playtest at GenCon w/ Brennan Lee Mulligan and Aabria Iyengar
THIS was the wildest game of my entire life, I tell the whole story in THIS VIDEO, but it was a great moment for DC20 to have such amazing people in this industry play it! No there is not a video of the GAME, I wanted it to be a private and fun game that they could just "shut off", sit back, and relax for. But it could not have gone better!
Less YouTube = More DC20
So I recently made an annoncement on YouTube that I will be making LESS videos and focusing more of my time on the development of DC20... which is nothing but a HUGE WIN for the community. It takes about 1 full day per week to do all it takes to make 1 video each week... so if I dont do that... I have 20% MORE TIME to make DC20!
Now don't get me wrong, I will still be making videos! But instead of making vidoes because I "have to" (or the algorithm will kill me), I NOW will make videos because I WANT TO and I have something cool to share with everyone! I have a full video explaining it HERE, but overall I think this is a win for everyone, because I get to do what I love the most (making DC20) and yall get to get DC20 content more and faster because I can focus on that first (instead of videos).
New Executive Assistant = More DC20
This is HUGE, and I am sharing this becuase of what it means for DC20! Because of the Kickstarter's WILD success I have been able to hire a full time assistant / editor / director / etc! His name is Sky (you've seen him around for YEARS on discord) and yall have now also help make his dream come true as well!
But this is HUGE yall... the amount of things Sky can now take off my plate... which lets me spend MORE time creating DC20... is MASSIVE! This is just the start of what things will be possible from the amount of love and support this community has given us! Thank you all again!
Missing Survey Count: 2,766
